According to the Vietnam News Agency, on August 11th, a dialogue between Vietnam and Uganda, titled "Promoting the Sustainable Development of the Coffee Industry within the Framework of South-South Cooperation", was held in Hanoi.

 

Vũ Yumao, Deputy Director of the International Cooperation Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment of Vietnam, stated at the dialogue that the coffee industries in Vietnam and Uganda play a significant role in the livelihoods of millions of people. The two countries have rich experience and considerable potential for cooperation in areas such as the construction of coffee-growing areas, the organization of the value chain, processing, increasing added value, and expanding markets.

 

Mr. Fan Yumao pointed out that currently, the coffee industry development is no longer merely focused on increasing production, but rather places greater emphasis on improving quality and added value, enhancing sustainability, and adapting to climate change. Vietnam and Ukraine can enhance their experience sharing and choose suitable development plans based on their respective actual situations.

 

Frank K. Tumwebaze, the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of Uganda, stated that the future of millions of coffee growers depends on achieving a balance between yield, sustainability and resilience to risks. Collaborating with Vietnam and the Sustainable Trade Initiative (IDH) organization will help Uganda draw on relevant experiences and promote the development of a climate-resilient coffee industry that does not cause deforestation.

 

The CEO of IDH, Daan Wensing, believes that in the face of the impacts of climate change and the increasingly stringent requirements from the international market, it is essential for all parties to strengthen cooperation and make joint investments in order to establish a long-term and sustainable coffee supply system.

 

This dialogue meeting aims to share the development priorities of the coffee industries in Vietnam and Uganda. With the support of IDH, the governments of the two countries have for the first time reached a cooperation intention on promoting the development of sustainable, climate-adaptive and forest-protecting coffee industries. This is a new development in deepening South-South cooperation between the two major Robusta coffee-producing countries in the world.

 

The representatives attending the meeting hope that the two countries will continue to strengthen the connections between government departments, research institutions, enterprises and development partners, and expand cooperation in the coffee industry and other promising agricultural fields.

 

During the event, IDH officially announced the launch of the Climate Change Resilient Coffee Project (RCP) in Vietnam. With the support of the German ALDI SÜD company as the first investor, this project plans to establish a traceable and verifiable regenerative Robusta coffee supply system over the next four years.

 

The project aims to reach approximately 75,000 coffee growers. Among them, 70% of the participating farmers will adopt regenerative agricultural practices, striving to reduce 240,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions and increase the farmers' income by 15%. The project outcomes will be tracked and reported through the Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) system, the traceability system, and the mechanism for jointly releasing results.
